But Schools Don't Make Jobs!

The results of a survey reveal a strong belief that education equals employment, so most individuals have aspirations to ever-higher academic qualifications. Only 30-40 percent of students however receive senior secondary schooling. Academic education alone equals difficulty in getting employment. The second main finding of the survey is that there is an ever-growing shortage of jobs for the academically educated so that, on the job market, academic education qualifications are devaluing rapidly. This waste of time, motivation and abilities creates anger, frustration and leads to unplanned pregnancies, crime and drug abuse.

Ethiopia: Education For All

Before the 1974 revolution in Ethiopia, only 15% of the school-age population was in school, and 95% of adults were unable to read or write. In the following decade, the number of schools tripled, teacher numbers grew and the percentage of children attending schools doubled. "Learn and then teach" became the motto of the National Literacy Campaign which from 1978 to 1988 educated adults in 15 languages. The literacy movement in Ethiopia continues to gain momentum.

SET SETAL: Walls that Talk

In Wolof, SET SETAL means "be clean and clean up". It is a movement initiated by the young people of Dakar born out of a desire to literally clean up the town, which very quickly took on a symbolic dimension. Spontaneous action against the degradation of the environment and delinquency was expressed in wall paintings, sculptures and carvings created by young people from each quarter.

Joy in Learning

TOSTAN is a non-formal basic education programme in national languages in Senegal. In Wolof, spoken by the majority of Senegalese, TOSTAN means "breakthrough". This 18-month programme goes beyond literacy to give learners the means to define and solve problems, improve their families' health and start small-scale projects in response to local needs. Taking African culture as its starting point, the programme began with villagers' ideas 10 years ago. UNICEF granted its support in 1988, and it has now reached 15,000 people in over 350 villages across Senegal.

Education: A Basic Human Right

Teachers, parents, students and politicians discuss the problems of education in South Africa brought about by apartheid (difficulties in obtaining a good education, violence, lack of teaching materials, overcrowding, obsolete books, housing problems, low or no pay for teachers and their lack of status, high rates of illiteracy). To rectify this, during their policy conference in May 1992, the ANC made specific commitments to education in South Africa, inter alia, provision of a minimum of 10 years free and compulsory education, provision for those with disabilities and special learning needs, improving educational quality, ensuring education for young people expelled or having dropped out of school as a consequence of apartheid, development and provision of adult education, leading to the establishment of a single non-racial equal and democratic education system.
