Where To?

Although a descendant of Queens Hatchepsut, Nefertiti and Cleopatra, an Egyptian country girl is likely to grow up without the benefit of education. This video, made up of interviews of villagers, relates how women are perceived mainly in the context of child rearing and family caring. High drop-out and early marriage perpetuate the situation. 77 percent of rural women in Egypt are still illiterate.

Community Schools

Many of the "ezbah" or hamlets of Upper Egypt have few key services. Schools are far away and parents hesitate before letting their children, particularly girls, walk long distances alone. In 1992, UNICEF and the Government of Egypt began to set up Community Schools. Now over a thousand children, mostly girls, are enrolled in these schools which are in the community, run by the community and facilitators are young women from the area. The film retraces the history of the project from its beginnings and analyses the innovative aspects of this venture which has turned into a movement of empowerment and education.

Studying Literacy in Morocco

A joint American-Moroccan study looks at pre-school and primary school learning in two contrasting areas of Morocco: Marrakech, where children and their families speak a dialect of Arabic, and El Kassour, a rural village in the Atlas mountains, where the community speaks Berber. The lliteracy needs and relative achievements of boys and girls in both areas are examined, and the importance of pre-school learning emphasized. Koranic pre-schools, where most lessons consist of rote learning of the Koran, were found to be a valuable educational building block for achieving Arabic literacy.

Education For All

Education is a human right. We have the means, the power, the structure, the technology to achieve this right - yet do we have the will to provide education for all? Examples from Yemen, Mali, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Costa Rica, Ecuador and the United States of America illustrate how countries are trying different approaches to spreading literacy, health education, computer training, and environmental education; issues that are crucial for a better world and an equitable development.
