Escuela nueva

"New School"

The "New School" programme was launched by the Government of Colombia in 1975 to counter high drop-out rates and low quality of education in traditional schools. An active, flexible methodology is applied, concentrating not only on academic knowledge, but also on the pupil's self esteem, co-operation and solidarity. Aiming at strengthening links with the community, the programme takes into account the specific needs of peasant children, allowing for absences, i.e., during harvest time.

Education For All

Education is a human right. We have the means, the power, the structure, the technology to achieve this right - yet do we have the will to provide education for all? Examples from Yemen, Mali, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Costa Rica, Ecuador and the United States of America illustrate how countries are trying different approaches to spreading literacy, health education, computer training, and environmental education; issues that are crucial for a better world and an equitable development.

Literacy Campaign memories "Put your name on it"

The "Monsignor Leonidas Proaño" National Literacy Campaign has been one of the most significant educational and social events to occur in Ecuador in the last few years. Nearly 75,000 young literacy teachers and 350,000 people registered in the "Círculos de Alfabetización Popular (CAP)" (People's Literacy Circles) The campaign adopted Human Rights as its theme and both the literacy materials and training plan for the literacy teachers were structured around the subject. Literacy teachers were mostly secondary school students for whom participation in the campaign was established as a prerequisite for graduation. The campaign was planned as a first step in a wide movement towards education reform.

Konesans Fammi se Lespwa Timoun

Many Haitian children live in rural areas, but nearly 60 percent live in shanty towns. Safe drinking water is available for only 50 percent of those living in towns and for 30 percent of those living in the countryside. Children die of malaria, tetanus, diarrhoea, tuberculosis and above all malnutrition. The "Knowledge, Family Programme" associates health with education, thereby enlisting the help of parents in this development programme. The "Alpha mission project" in Creole, the principal language of the country, combats illiteracy.
Non-formal Initial Education in Mexico

Recognizing that family background and early childhood socialization are key factors to a child's capacity to function in any learning environment, the Mexican Government in co-operation with UNICEF has launched a non-formal initial education programme for children under 5 designed to develop physical, cognitive, emotional and social potential in the very young to prepare them to benefit fully from their later formal schooling. The programme operates through local promoters, selected from the community, responsible for training parents and resource persons. The programme was designed to be implemented at a national level. In 1989 it reached 210.000 children in some 5.200 communities.

Wiñarisun

How to achieve education for all when whole groups of society speak a different language? In the Andean regions of Peru, indigenous groups are in the majority and have little or no knowledge of Spanish. To bring literacy skills to these groups, a technical process has been used, involving teaching in the mother tongue, resulting in the setting up of a unique movement of literacy carried out in local languages. By the time learners complete the project, the impact on the community is already visible and these people now feel they can take part in the process of national development.

Wiñarisun - Vamos a crecer
