EDUCATION FOR ALL
EDUCATION POUR TOUS

Education For All

Education is a human right. We have the means, the power, the structure, the technology to achieve this right - yet do we have the will to provide education for all? Examples from Yemen, Mali, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Costa Rica, Ecuador and the United States of America illustrate how countries are trying different approaches to spreading literacy, health education, computer training, and environmental education; issues that are crucial for a better world and an equitable development.

Relevant Education For All: Innovation in Education in Papua New Guinea

Children in Papua New Guinea used to learn all their skills in the community, in their own language and culture. Following a period of formal, classroom teaching with emphasis on English and mathematics, education in Papua New Guinea is once again moving out into the community. Examples of initiatives in Milne Bay and Enga provinces show the revolutionary effects of the recent "education for all" campaign. Teaching is in local languages. Learning traditional values, social skills and agricultural techniques, as well as curriculum subjects, taught by community members, in addition to teachers, ensures children will play a useful role in the future of their community.

Ethiopia: Education For All

Before the 1974 revolution in Ethiopia, only 15 % of the school-age population was in school, and 95 % of the adult population was unable to read or write. In the following decade, the number of schools tripled, teacher numbers grew and the percentage of children attending schools doubled. "Learn and then teach" became the motto of the National Literacy Campaign which from 1978 to 1988 educated adults in 15 languages. The literacy movement in Ethiopia is continuing to gain momentum bringing empowerment and joy to people from all levels of society.
