Empowering Young Refugees

Two child care centres run by Cambodian staff for children aged 2-5 re-create elements of life in the home country; monthly training courses exist for adults in sewing and weaving and basic skills.

Since 1951

In 1950, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a Resolution founding the High Commission for Refugees to assist and protect refugees who were defined as people who "owing to well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion are outside the country of their nationality and are unable ... or unwilling to avail themselves of the protection of that country". Since 1951, UNHCR has been present in times of conflict on every continent, providing material assistance and physical protection to refugees. This video illustrates the work of UNHCR over the last four decades, stressing its message that "refugees are not a threat, they are threatened".
