The main activities of education for peace, human rights, democracy, international understanding and tolerance are the following:

  • support to Member States in the development of educational policies and plans, both at the formal and non-formal levels, in order to integrate the respect for human rights, the practice of democracy, the promotion of peace and intercultural understanding into mainstream education,

  • design and implementation of a number of national and/or sub-regional projects of education for a culture of peace, particularly in countries in transition and in post-conflict situation.

  • development of civics education programmes in a number of countries in co- operation with CIVITAS International, Education International and other organisations,

  • development of educational projects on non-violence and conflict resolution,

  • encourage the adaptation and dissemination of UNESCO teaching materials for peace, human rights, democracy and tolerance produced in recent years, favouring their translation into national and local languages. n assist in the elaboration of appropriate textbooks and educational materials provided for countries in pre- or post-conflict situations,

  • elaborate an overall strategy and develop a prototype curriculum for teacher training in co-operation with national and international institutions,

  • organise regional, sub-regional or national training workshops for teachers and other education agents,

  • promote networks for peace, human rights, democracy and non-violence education,

  • follow-up to the different international standard-setting instruments related to the right to education.

NATIONAL PROGRAMME ON EDUCATION FOR A CULTURE OF PEACE IN MALI

In Mali, with UNDP financial support, UNESCO will assist in introducing human rights and peace education in the school curricula of primary and secondary education. The three-year project is due to start at the end of 1999 and will focus on the analysis and reform of the curricula as well as the teaching methodology, the development of learning materials for human rights and peace education, and the training of trainers and teachers. The lessons learned in previous UNESCO/DANIDA projects covering six countries in Central America and three countries in Southern Africa will be drawn upon and applied to the Malian as well as to other national programmes.
