ENHANCING THE EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION IN EDUCATION

Since its founding over half a century ago, UNESCO has sought to promote worldwide educational information exchange. It collects data on key aspects of education from Member States and disseminates it through a network of nearly 40.000 organizations and istitutions. The purpose of this exchange is to share ideas, encourage innovation and reform, and promote international co-operation in education.
During the last decade UNESCO has extended its dissemination network, issued every two years a UNESCO Education Catalogue of Documents and Publications, begun publishing since the World Conference on Education for ALL (Jomtien, 1990) a series of brochures, UNESCO-Worldwide Action in Education, presenting a global picture of the Organization's activities and strategies in this key area. Finally, since 1991, it publishes every two years the World Education Report which provides a wealth of information and key data on the development of education.

The demand for and use of UNESCO documents and publications in education has continued to grow from year to year. Today, in an effort to render better services to all concerned with education, UNESCO is making use of new technologies in order to enhance access to educational information, widen its audience, and possibly reduce dissemination costs. There are now available:

• Two CD-ROMs, periodically updated: the first, entitled Key UNESCO Data, contains 18 databases on education, graphs, illustrations and video sequences. The second,Selected UNESCO Documents, corresponding to nearly 25.000 printed pages, contains in full text approximately 200 of the most important documents included in the UNESCO Education Catalogue.

• A multimedia kit entitled UNESCO, 50 Years for Education consisting of a brochure and two CD-ROMs. With its selected collection of texts, films, videos and sound recordings, this kit retraces the evolution of key educational issuses and of UNESCO's worldwide action in this area since 1946. It constitutes a unique source of information for policy-makers, teachers and researchers, as well as for youth, through its attractive multimedia content which links education and the related action on the Organization to major societal changes having occurred during the last half century.
