During 1898-95, the Working Group initiated a number of inventory and analytic overviews of education sector analysis.

Three documents were elaborated on sub-Saharan Africa during 1985-89 (Review of Recent Sector Studies and Preparation of a Sector Study Data Base, 1989), on South Africa during 1993-95 (After Apartheid, What? A Review of Externally Initiated, Commissioned, and Supported Studies of Education in South Africa, 1994) and on sub-Saharan Africa during 1990-94. The last one Analyses, Agendas and Priorities for Education in Africa, 1990-1994 presents approximately 240 education sector studies in the region.

Since 1996, WGESA has supported country-based and country-led reviews of education sector analysis. Presently, the Working Group is facilitating studies in Burkina Faso, Ghana and Lesotho  while the outcome of the review in Zimbabwe was published in 1999. The reviews are expected to provide inventories of education sector analyses in the country in question, facilitate co-operation and collaboration among the stakeholders in the education sector and to increase the understanding of the crucial link between research and policy-making and implementation.
