Project 2000+ Activities

Nigeria

The Nigerian National Task Force (NTF) on Project 2000+ has its headquarters in the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council. Members of the task force are drawn from relevant educational institutions, NGOs such as the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria, Nigerian Association of Teachers of Technology, Nigerian Association for Women in Technology and Mathematics as well as individuals who have established themselves in science and technology education.

One of the first assignments of the NTF was to draw up a Blueprint on Project 2000+ for Nigeria. The Blueprint, which sets out the rationale, objectives, functions and activities for promoting STL for an initial period of three years, has been presented to the National Council on Education for approval.

Meanwhile, a proposal for a baseline study to determine the level of STL among farmers, traders, housewives and artisans has been prepared and submitted to a prospective funding body for sponsorship.

Professor S.T. Bajah, a member of the NTF has initiated a project "Early Learning Science Series for Africa (ELSSA)". The project, funded by the British Council, has held zonal workshops in three zones: Ibadan, Enugu and Kaduna. ELSSA aims at making science interesting and meaningful for children by making possible for them to learn, act and sing science. The project has already produced jingles, songs and plays on audio and video cassettes with remarkable success. It is also in the process of producing 42 titles of Science Readers for Children.
