World Council of Associations for Technology Education (WOCATE INC.)

 

WOCATE is an international non-governmental organisation with more than 50 members comprising associations and individuals from about 30 countries the world over.

The activities of the Council are focused on the following main fields of action:

WOCATE has working relations with various UN agencies. It is a member of UNESCO's Project 2000+ Steering Committee and collaborates with the agency in various projects and publications. It is also a member of other international non-governmental organisations such as ICASE, American Vocational Association (AVA), Europäische Gesellschaft für Technische Bildung (EGTB), European Forum of Technical and Vocational Education and Training(EFVET) and National Association of Industrial and Technical Teacher Educators (NAITTE).

Ibero-American Science & Technology Education Consortium (ISTEC)

 

The Ibero-American Science and Technology Education Consortium (ISTEC) is a non-profit organization comprising educational, research and industrial institutions throughout the Americas and the Iberian peninsula. The Consortium, founded in 1990, was established to accelerate economic development by fostering scientific, engineering and technology education, joint international research and development efforts among universities, scientific centres and industry and to provide a cost-effective vehicle for technology transfer.

The objectives of the Consortium are to conceive, plan and carry out activities of higher education, research & development and technology transfer which facilitate scientific and technical progress of Ibero-American countries. It encourages the free flow and access of information in the pursuit of technical excellence. Present policy targets the fields of science, engineering and technology without excluding future extensions to other areas.

The Consortium's initiatives are member-driven, flexible and run concurrently. Within initiatives, projects are identified, planned and implemented. They are designed with short- and long-term goals with an eye on social impact. Dynamic and expandable, they are coordinated to maximize the utilization of available resources, avoid duplication of efforts and to respond to individual member needs and ideologies.

Some of the ISTEC's notable initiatives are: Library Linkages Plan, to promote the use and creation of innovative, cross border S&T information-sharing services; Advanced Continuing Education (ACE), to upgrade human resources through on-site training, distance learning and non-traditional exchange programmes; Resrarch & Design Laboratories, to design and install modular, flexible and expandable laboratory facilities; and Los Libertadores, a network of Centres of Excellence.

ISTEC also organizes seminars, meetings, technical conferences and courses as well as granting scholarships and fellowships.

It publishes research interactions and publications as well as a newsletter ISTEC Informa, and a "Monthly Message".

The Polish Association of Teachers of Science and Technology (SNPPiT)

 

The Polish Association of Teachers of Science and Technology (Stowarzyszenie Nauczycieli Przedmiotów Przyrodniczych i Technicznych - SNPPiT), created in 1991, basically groups primary and secondary school teachers of biology, chemistry, geography, maths, physics and technology. Its members also include representatives from teacher training colleges as well as universities.

The SNPPiT acts as a forum where practising teachers and teacher educators can exchange views and experience both on their subject matters and on the pedagogical aspects of their activities, the accent being put on interdisciplinarity.

Some of its recent activities include dissemination of information, collection of contributions and distribution of prizes for a competition organised by the Federation of the European Chemical Industry (CEFIC); participation in the EDEN project on (Energy, Development, Environment); as well as the coordination of the School to School project of the Italian journal La Nuova Ecologia.

SNPPiT regularly publishes an information bulletin in Polish and English on its own activities as well as those held in Europe, of interest to its members.

Every year it organises an International Interdisciplinary Congress of Teachers (MIOKON) - MIOKON '97 focusing on Material Science. Previous congresses dealt with Environment and Cancer Prevention; Teaching about the Environment; Computers in Science Education; Education-Industry-Environment; Sea Pollution etc.. Proceedings of the congresses are published in Polish and English and are available to teachers as teaching support.

Réseau Ecole et Nature

 

Réseau Ecole et Nature (School and Nature Network), established in 1983, counts 150 associations and 250 individuals as members and coordinates its action with 17 regional networks, 95 focal points throughout France and 5 abroad.

The aim of the Network is above all to foster the relationship between people and their environment - natural and built - through EE. A characteristic feature is the broad spectrum of its members and the variety of educational approaches that are used. The basis of its action can be summed up by the following: autonomy, responsibility, socialisation, field work, creativity, group work, global thinking and concrete actions.
