This 2-year UNESCO project aimed at reviewing the science curriculum and improving science teaching in middle and secondary schools, is being implemented by the Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education and the Department of Education, Jammu and Kashmir State, in collaboration with UNESCO/New Delhi.
The project will notably:
- review and modernize the existing curricula for classes I-X (6-15 year old pupils)
- produce quality materials
- produce a training package for teachers
- train a core group of mobile master trainers for preparing teachers working at different levels to transact/revise the new curriculum
- suggest measures for recasting the existing system/method of assessment to make it a reliable measure of student development and an instrument for improving science teaching in schools
Two workshops on Improving Science Teaching in Middle and Secondary Schools aimed at in-service teacher educators were organised in this context. The first, held in Kargil from 1-3 July 1997, was attended by 34 teachers (13 female, 21 male).
The second, held in Leh from 7-9 July 1997, was attended by 63 middle and secondary teachers (33 female, 30 male).
In both workshops the principles of participatory, interactive group problem-solving and social psychology were employed. It was intended that the methods adopted at the workshops should themselves constitute a demonstration of innovative student centred instructional techniques that teachers should use in their own classrooms.
The success of these workshops was testified by a recommendation from
the participants of both workshops that such workshops should become a regular
feature of their professional lives.
