UNESCO has a longstanding commitment to promote health and quality of life of all people and was one of the first UN organisations to undertake sector work on school health and nutrition. Ever since its establishment, various UNESCO programmes and projects have encompassed topics in relation to school health. The strategy for action is based on: -the comprehension that poor health and malnutrition lead to lowered school enrolment, educational wastage and poor classroom performance, as reflected in the World Declaration on Education for All and Framework of Action adopted in Jomtien, 1990. -the theory for comprehensive approaches to promote school health, stressing the links between healthy school environments, school health services and school health education. |
The
general strategy is to promote:
-SCHOOL HEALTH including inter-agency collaboration with WHO, UNICEF, the World Bank; and -SCHOOL HEALTH EDUCATION covering both integration of health and nutrition education into science and technology education as well as fostering general health education notably in collaboration with WHO. |
