PROMOTING HEALTH IN SCHOOLS

 

QUESTIONS WHICH MAY INFORM A SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAMME

The physical school environment

A. Are there adequate clean and functioning toilets?
B. Is there a regular and safe water supply?
C. Are the buildings comfortable (egs. appropriate temperature and ventilation) and in good repair?
D. Do the buildings include adequate facilities such as rooms for quiet work, exercise etc.
E. Do the classrooms provide adequate space for each child, with comfortable furniture, necessary lighting, and protection from noise?
F. Can all children view the classroom chalkboard and is it legible?
G. Are there adequate textbooks and learning resources in order to avoid crowding?
H. Is the school a smoke-free environment?

School policy

A. Are there clear social aims and policies (eg. with respect to bullying, nutrition, smoking, punishment)?
B. Is the self-esteem of all students actively promoted by demonstrating that everyone can make a contribution?
C. Is there effective communication amongst and between teachers, parents and pupils?
D. Do teachers exemplify health-related behaviours?
E. Is the provision of school catering healthy?
F. Are there procedures and management strategies to recognise and reduce stress?
G. Are there good links between the school, the home and the community?
Is there continuity between primary and associated secondary schools?
Pupils' and communities' health
A. How frequently are children absent and what is their specific health problem?
B. What heights are the pupils and are they continuing to grow?
C. Do the pupils have hearing or sight impairments?
D. Are the pupils continuing to progress through the school or are they too old for their grade level?
E. What are the key health concerns in the community?
F. What are the key environmental concerns?
G. Are there any conditions which are of specific concern to the school's teachers?

School curriculum

A. Does the curriculum provide stimulating and wide-ranging activities for all students?
B. Is health education integrated across the curriculum?
C. Are programmes planned for continuity and progression?
D. Are physical education and recreational and exercise options available to all students?
E. Are the specialist services available in the community drawn upon for advice and support

School health services

A. Is health guidance accessible and relevant to all students?
B. Is there a counselling service for students and staff?
C. Are health services integrated with other components of the health promoting school?
D. Are health services co-ordinated with health, social and legal services in the community?
