WHAT IS HEALTH EDUCATION ?

 Health education focuses on:
1. important behaviours and conditions that promote health or that put health at risk,
2. skills needed to practice those behaviors or to address those conditions both personally and collectively,
3. knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and values related to those behaviors and conditions,
4. providing learning experiences that allow students to model and practice skills."

Thus, health education, as one facet of the school health programme and the total school curriculum, is integral to "Education for All" and "Health for All". "Good health is essential for effective learning and education is a powerful means of enabling children and adults to attain and maintain good health" (UNESCO/UNDP, 1995, Topic 11). Not only does health education have a direct effect on the school pupil but, through the pupils' examples, can benefit families, communities and environments.
