| | - In June 2000, just after Dakar, Turkmenistan conducted the first DFU national workshop in Central Asia, with technical and financial support from UNESCO Almaty, UNICEF Asghabad and UNDP Asghabad. - A national EFA group (or Forum), 12 members, headed by one of the 2 Education Deputy-Ministers was constituted for the preparation of the national EFA plan. However, the work of this group has stalled and so far not much has occurred since the constitution of the group. During his visit to Almaty in August 2001, and because Turkmenistan belongs to the Iran cluster, DG asked UNESCO Almaty to take over EFA developments in Turkmenistan, in waiting for the nomination of the new head of the Iran Office. In this respect, MOE-Turkmenistan recently requested the assistance of UNESCO Almaty to reactivate the DFU. - The forthcoming EFA forum of 17 January 2002 should restart these efforts in the country. | | |
