    CENTRAL PROVINCE AND NYANZA PROVINCE CONSULTATIONS

    The UNESCO/Nairobi Office has supported two province-wide consultations involving all the districts One was convened in Central Province from 19-21 November 2001 and the other in Nyanza Province from 13-16 March 2002. These consultations brought together some 280 key actors and stakeholders in education, including the Provincial Directors of Education, the District Education Officers, the District Inspectors of Schools, the Coordinators of the District Centres for Early Childhood Care and Education, the Chairman of the Provincial Education Board, the Chairman of the District Education Boards, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), representatives from religious organizations, key NGO´s, representatives from School Committee’s, PTAs and Head Teachers. Also participating were technical specialists from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Headquarters, UNESCO and other development partners. The consultations were organized around information-sharing on EFA. Field visits were undertaken to observe at district-level the various education sub-sectors and to engage participants in discussions with schools and surrounding communities. After visiting educational facilities, District EFA plans of action were drafted.

    EFA CLUSTER CONSULTATION, Mombasa, Kenya, 31 January to 2 February 2002

    The UNESCO Nairobi Office convened an EFA Cluster Consultation in Mombasa, Kenya, from 31 January to 2 February 2002. This brought together participants from Burundi, Kenya, wanda and Uganda. It was attended by the national EFA Coordinators, the secretaries-General of the National Commissions for UNESCO, planners and provincial directors of education. The objectives were:

    1) to review the status and progress made in developing in each country the EFA plan of action;

    2) to sensitise the Provincial Directors of Education and the EFA Coordinators about their role in preparing and implementing the EFA plans; and

    3) to establish strategies for developing EFA plans of action and to create a network to drive EFA in the cluster.
