Adult Learners Week

The initiator of the first ALW "Festivalul Şanselor Tale" in Romania in the year 2000 was the mouvement of popular universities represented by the National Association of Popular Universities and the Popular University “Ioan I. Dalles” in Bucharest, in cooperation and with the special support of the IIZ-DVV Project Romania which ensured the overall coordination of the event.

The Ministry of Education and Research, the Ministry of Culture and Sports, and the National Council of Vocational Training for Adults contributed to the national dimension as well as to the unity of the event.

The vision and mission of ALW

  • To promote the concept of lifelong learning at national, regional and local level,
  • To stimulate and strengthen partnerships between the government and NGOs in order to encourage learning for all,
  • To stimulate non-formal and informal education through new, creative and inspiring learning methods for adults,
  • To promote the vision and mission of the national educational system as a holistic and integrated one, recognising the importance of all formal, non-formal and informal education and training methods.

Target groups

The general public, ranging from youth to senior people, is targeted by the festival:

  • Young graduates trying to build up their career,
  • Employees seeking further learning/training,
  • Socially and economically disadvantaged people (national minorities, refugees, unemployed, women, people with low education levels),
  • Senior citizens willing to share their life and professional experiences, and/or wishing to participate in entertainment activities and hobbies.

Providers involved

  • Schools, high schools, universities,
  • Private education and training centres,
  • Governmental learning organizations,
  • Museums and libraries, in both rural and urban areas,
  • Cultural houses, popular universities, theatres, cinemas,
  • Cultural and educational counties’ departments,
  • Training centres of the chambers of commerce and industry,
  • Public parks, streets, non-conventional areas...

The biggest achievment to date is the cooperation between diverse institutions - and we are proud of that!
