Adult Learners Week

Learning festivals had been organised mainly at district levels before the official beginning of IntALWinE. The learners committees undertook various activities in both urban and rural areas and mobilized the learners.

The official opening of Adult Learners Week in Cyprus was in April 2002 in Nicosia with the participation of about 2000 learners. Many learning events were organised during the week. In the following years, many activities have been taking place, with special attention to small rural communities, where many learners of all ages are participating.

The Ministry of Education and Culture supports the learning festivals and high officials, in many cases the Minister of Education and Culture, address the learners, congratulate and encourage them. The initiative for the organisation of ALW is taken by the Ministry of Education with the support of the adult education committee members.

The efforts today are concentraded on the non-governmental organisations involved in adult education which for the moment are not partciparing officially in ALW. The non-governmental organisations - trade unions, educational associations, local authorities, the University of Cyprus, Collages, mass media etc. organise various learning activities and events, but not yet within Adult Learners Week. Coordination is needed and efforts to be intensified for a national ALWeek.
