Adult Learner’s Week

Adult Learner’s Week, organized since 1998 in the second week of October, has become a long-awaited tradition in Estonia, popularizing adult education and introducing different learning opportunities.

It is the purpose of the festival to value learning and to create a positive image of lifelong learning and spread it, keeping in mind the interests of various target groups of the society.

The motto of the festival is an Estonian proverb: “Live to learn and learn to live”, accompanied since 2005 by another slogan: “What John learns, that John knows“.

ALW was initiated by the non-profit Association of Estonian Adult Educators ANDRAS in 1998 and developed, year after year, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Research until the establishment of an all-Estonian cooperation network in 2002. Today the ALW network covers all 15 counties with a support group in every county, made up of experienced volunteers – activists engaged in the project all the year round. A nation-wide support group is responsible for the organisation of the week, while a group of experts has been working as an advisory board since 2003. Involvement in several international projects allows spreading and exchanging experiences related to ALW.

Nation-wide events and activities include: the opening ceremony, the "Day of E-Learning", open door days at adult education centres, the learning train and the Adult Education Forum.

Learners, educators, organisations supporting education and local governments at county and national level are acknowledged during the festival.

The festival has also given birth to new initiatives – the Learner’s Forum, held for the first time at the end of 2005, new local learners’ associations which are continuously established, the collection of individual learning stories and the compilation and publication of an all-Estonian collection of learning stories.

The Ministry of Education and Research and ANDRAS are convinced that the effective cooperation network of ALW is having a strong future potential as a promoter for a lifelong learning environment.
