    2002
The first Adult Learners Week in Cyprus went on for three weeks, including activities from 3 up to 27 April. A small group of international guests - from Switzerland and Greece, from the European Commission and from UIE - had the pleasure to be part of the festival which was completely decentralized. The range of activities set up by adult education centers in the communities all over the country included exhibitions, dance and theatre performances, open days in learning centers and the presentation of awards to learners and tutors. Learners had been actively involved in the preparation of these events through "members committees".

The week was coordinated by the head of adult education in the Ministry of Education and Culture with the purpose of raising the profile of and support for NON-FORMAL adult learning. The mobilization of people to take part in the festival and to share with others the results and projects of their learning activities was, indeed, impressive: the official opening ceremony in the capital Nicosia alone drew almost 2000 people.
