Since 1998, an adult learners week has been organized in Egypt. In 2001, a press conference was given by the Minister of Education, and celebrations took place during the entire month of September in all the provinces of the country. The objectives of the festival are to help provide orientation for learners and assess their learning needs - particulary the needs of women in rural areas - and to foster the cooperation between governmental authorities and non-governemtal groups which are in the area of adult education. The purpose of the festival is also to highlight the importance of education and lifelong larning in the context of globalization.
Activites are carried out in the capital city Cairo as well as in at local level in towns all over the country. They comprise exhibitions, spcial programmes on local TV and radio channels, celebrations of successful learners and communities, establishing centers for people with special needs and setting up libraries. Caravans are sent out to cater to the most remote areas with information and awareness raising materials on the need for continous learning.
Adult learners week is foreseen every year in the future.
