2002 ***
Literacy Week in Mali
has been carried out for seven years. In September 2002, the overall theme
chosen was "A credible alternative to ensure Education for All".
The objective of the week is threefold: 1) advocacy, 2) assessment &
review, and 3) programme development. In one area of the country (outside
the capital), locally elected representatives, mayors, and the directors
of education are asked for cooperation to set up events, in solidarity
with the press and TV and private radio stations.
The greatest challenge for the Literacy Week is to raise and maintain the motivation of learners. A competition to stimulate the creation of poems and texts for village writers is the most effective means: being able to choose their own topic, space is given to newly literate people to express themselves and to make their voices, their stories, and their poems visible and heard.
