Each year, a Literacy Week takes place in Mexico, starting on International Literacy Day on 8 September until 14 September. A diversity of educational and cultural activities and exhibitions are set up in the thirty-one provinces under the leadership of local authorities, while a competition is carried out at central level to promote literacy and basic education.

The Mexican Literacy Week is an annual event. The main puropose is to improve the provision of basic education, and to raise awareness on literacy as a fundamental part of basic education. The overall coordination of the festival is with the National Institute for Adult Education, which is a semi-autonomous institute within the public education sector.
