ADULT LEARNING WEEK: THE SOUTH AFRICAN EXAMPLE
The 1998 Adult Learning Week in South Africa took place on March 02-06.
Supported by the Canadian Government, UIE invited adult education
directors and specialists from ten countries (Benin, Ghana, Haiti, India,
Jamaica, Mali, Namibia, Senegal, Tanzania and Uganda) to learn from the
South African example. This shared experience should help to strengthen the
international movement to develop a United Nations learning week as
foreseen by the "Hamburg Declaration on Adult Learning" and the "Agenda for
the Future"

LATIN AMERICAN PLANNING MEETING FOR CONFINTEA FOLLOW UP 26/27 JANUARY,
1998: "THE FUTURE IS NOW"
Hosted by the National Institute for Adult Education in Mexico the planning
meeting was attended by representatives of UIE, OREALC-UNESCO, CEAAL ( The
Latin American Council for Adult Education), CREFAL ( The Regional Latin
American Center for Adult Education), and the members of the Mexican
Delegation to CONFINTEA.
There was a strong feeling against having further large forums and the
proposal was that three sub regional meetings be held. One in Mexico/
Central America to be hosted by Mexico( Belize, Costa Rica, Cuba, El
Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honudras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Dominican
Republic), one in the Andean countries to be hosted by Colombia( Colombia,
Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela), and one in the Southern Cone to be hosted
by Uruguay( Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina). The three
regions correspond to different demographic and social conditions affecting
educational policy.
