UNESCO Director General Koïchiro Matsuura will launch the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014) at UN headquarters in New York on March 1. The Decade encourages countries to integrate the concept of sustainable development into their education policies and into all aspects of learning. The aim is to bring about behavioural changes that will usher in a more viable and just society. More
28-02-2005 E-consultation on literacy for 2006 EFA Global Monitoring Report For the first time, the Education for All Global Monitoring Report is organizing an online consultation. It will focus on literacy, the theme of the Report’s 2006 edition. The e-consultation runs from March 10-25. The objective of the consultation is to capture the range of views, concerns and expertise surrounding this "forgotten goal" of fundamental importance for development. Contributions will inform the Report scheduled for release in late 2005. More

“Adult Learning Links” are added to Aladin Website
Nearly 200 annotated “Adult Learning Links” have been added to the website of the Adult Learning Documentation and Information Network (ALADIN). It is now possible to search for full-text materials, abstracts, reference material, online journals, databases, statistics etc. in the area of Adult Learning. Important sub-areas of Adult Learning are included with their own links such as literacy and popular education. More

We learned with deep sadness that Mahindra Ranaweera, senior programme specialist (from 1983 to 1992) and former Deputy Director of UIE  passed away on December 11, 2002 in his home country Sri Lanka. 
UIE's work in curriculum development and non-formal education were heavily influenced by Ranaweera. His competence and experience were unanimously recognized and his modest sense of humour was admired. 
UIE and its partners remember him as a wise, gentle, cordial and efficient colleague who always was ready to offer advice and helping shoulders. 

First International Conference on Adult Basic and Literacy Education in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Region Adopted "Pietermaritzburg Declaration"
Adult educators and development practitioners from SADC countries express commitment to the revitalisation of adult basic and literacy education for democracy and sustainable development in the SADC region and in the African continent. 180 participants gathered at the first International Conference on Adult Basic and Literacy Education in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region held at the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa from 3rd to 5th December 2002, adopted the "Pietermaritzburg Declaration" (available in HTML or PDF ).

Lifelong learning in Europe
While applauding efforts to reach out to the school-aged population, two hundred delegates from Europe, North America and Central Asia highlighted during a recent international conference on Lifelong Learning in Europe, the inadequate attention being given to the learning needs of adults in many countries. The conference held in Sofia, Bulgaria, 6-9 November was attended by ministers, parliamentarians, government officials, development partners, civil society representatives, researchers and adult education practitioners. Participants agreed on a call of action stressing key issues of concern.

Remarks by John Daniel, Assistant Director-General for Education, UNESCO (Speech given on the occasion of the reception of the Hamburg Senate at the Town Hall on June 14, 2002)

On 14 June 2002 UIE will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its founding. The celebrations will start with a press conference at 10.00 am, followed by a reception held by the Hamburg Senate in the Town Hall at 11.00 am. Highlight of the celebrations will be a public lecture and debate on Lifelong Learning to be moderated by Rita Süssmuth, former President of the German Federal Parliament and Chair of the Independent Commission 'Migration'. Nobel Prize Winner Wole Soyinka from Nigeria, the Indian feminist activist and researcher Srilatha Batliwala and the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Freimut Duve are the key speakers. The event will take place at the Magna Aula of the University of Hamburg on 14 June at 4 pm. On the occasion of the anniversary UIE will publish a special retrospective issue of its periodical, the International Review of Education.

ON-LINE FORUM: Adult Basic Learning and Education in Developing Countries (ABLE)
SIDA (Swedish International Development Agency) is organizing an on-line forum on the current situation and future prospects of adult learning and basic education in developing countries. It will be moderated and conducted in English and Spanish. It will run for five weeks. 
The forum is open for anyone to join in. Special efforts are being made to encourage the participation of people from developing countries, in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean.

Report on the meeting of the Interagency Strategic Group on Lifelong Learning (Hamburg, 25-26 April 2002)
This meeting brought together a group of experts and policy makers from countries, agencies and academia to share views on the role of lifelong learning in developed countries and its values for developing countries. However, the emphasis was on the relevance of lifelong learning to educational and development challenges in developing countries and to identify strategic steps that could help transform current policies.  Another objective of the meeting was to identify policy measures/strategies to achieve the goals set by the Dakar Framework of Action  and the Hamburg Declaration (CONFINTEA V) in order to realise basic education for all as a foundation for lifelong learning.

Meeting of the Advisory Group on the Mid-Term Review of CONFINTEA V  2003 (Hamburg, April 27-28, 2002)
The CONTINTEA-Mid-Term Review will take stock of the implementation of adult learning policies and programmes on selected themes, issues and problems identified during CONFINTEA V and the Dakar World Education Forum, which countries, institutions and individuals are implementing in their  adult learning, adult literacy, non-formal and lifelong learning programmes.

Interagency Strategic Group on Lifelong Learning (Hamburg, April 25-26 2002)
This meeting, organized by the UNESCO Institute for Education and UNESCO ED/BAS,  will bring together a group of experts and policy makers from countries, agencies and academia to share views on the role of LLL in developed countries and its value for developing countries . The group will discuss the national situations and a concrete planning or reform cases. The emphasis will however be on the relevance of LLL to address the educational and development challenges in developing countries and concrete policy measures and strategies to address them

Policy Dialogue on Adult and Lifelong Learning: New Directions, Relevance and Sustainability (Hyderabad, India, 7 – 10 April 2002)
 Participants from 20 Asian countries will exchange ideas and information on  adult and lifelong learning policies and effective programmes and practices in the region. Concrete examples of new and innovative approaches in literacy, post-literacy, non-formal adult and lifelong learning will be analyzed and factors identified that have contributed to successful or not so successful outcomes of these polices and programmes.
