Expert meeting on the Potential of Distance and Open Learning in the Training of Adult Educators and Grassroots Workers Involved in Literacy and Non-formal Education (Pretoria, South Africa, 7-9 January, 2003) 

The meeting was co-organized by UIE, ABET of the University of South Africa, the Department for International Development of the United Kingdom, and the Campus of Open Learning of the University of Delhi, within the CONFINTEA V framework on quality adult learning for all, which highlighted the importance of improving the training of adult educators and facilitators as a priority issue.  Five country studies were presented from Bangladesh, Nigeria, India, Tanzania and South Africa. A team of inter-disciplinary experts made critical and valuable inputs on a wide range of issues were also discussed on:

  • International development goals relating to literacy, non-formal education, adult and lifelong learning, including the Millennium Development Goals, the Dakar Framework for Action, the UN Literacy Decade among others
  • Policy and the role of the state and its involvement
  • Strategies for training adult educators
  • Networking among adult educators
  • Quality of curriculum design and development 
  • How can ICT harnessed for ABE?
The outcomes of the meeting included:
  • An initial map of experience in ABE training involving Open Distance Learning methods and the use of ICT
  • The achievement of broad recommendations on the training of trainers to inform national training policies and to tabled at the Mid-term Review CONFINTEA V, which is to be held late this year in Bangkok, Thailand
  • Agreement on setting up a working group nominated from among the conference participants to carry the conference recommendations. The working group will also be responsible for identifying a possible research agenda, and establishing a UNESCO led research in ABE/NFE/LLL. 
  • Agreement on the development of a network of adult education specialists to establish a long-term, accredited program or the training and professional development of adult educators. 
  • A joint publication on this meeting is under process.
