(a) Performances on Literacy:

The mean percent scores on the literacy, numeracy And life skills tests were 25.1 percent (SD18.2); 32.2 percent (SD20.0) and 32.6 percent (SD=16.3) respectively. Although performance were generally poor pupils were less competent on English Language skills and displayed relative more understanding of tasks in mathematics and life skills. Indicating that the pupils were less competent on English Language skills.

(b) Performaces on the Subtests (of literacy, Numeracy and life skills)

When performances were analysed on the basis of content areas (sub-tests) of the three test, on the literacy test, performances improved in the order writing skill (18.2 percent) (SD 18.0); lexis and structure (31.0 percent; SD 20.0) and reading comprehension (39.2 percent SD 26.6) indicating that pupils had very poor writing skills.

On the numeracy test, the mean percent scores decreased in the order: every day statistics; = 40.8, (SD 38.6); numbers and numeration mean percent score = 36.3 (SD 20.0); measurement 29.2, (SD = 19.0) and Geometry/shapes 28.0 (SD 24.6) indicating that the level of acquisition of geometry skills was very low.

On the sub-test of life skill , pupils performed better on the science sub-test (mean percent score 32.8, SD 18.2); followed by survival skills and health and hygiene (mean percent scores 31.9 SD 19.8 and 31.8 SD 20.5 respectively). The least scores were obtained in social studies sub-test (mean percent score 30.1SD.
