In the literacy test, there was no statistically significant difference in the mean percent scores of boy 24.8 (SD 17.7) and girls 25.8 (SD 18.8). On the numeracy test however, the mean percent score by boys 32.4 (SD 17.1) was higher than the mean percent score by girls, 31.9 (SD 16.9). In the life skills there was hardly any difference in the mean percent score by boys, 32.6 (SD 16.3) and girls 32.8 (SD 16.3). The trends of performance by pupils on the content areas were similar for boys and girls in literacy and numeracy. In life skills tests girls mean percent scores in health and hygiene 32.1 (SD 20.7), social studies 32 (SD 19.6) and science 33 (SD 18.3) were better than the mean percent scores by boys 31.7 (SD 20.3), 31.9 (SD 18.9) and 32.7 (SD 18.1) respectively. However, boys performed better than girls in survival skill with mean percent scores of 35.0 (SD 24.1) and 34.7 (SD 23.4) respectively.
