To strengthen UNESCO’s activities pertaining to dialogue among cultures and peace, the Director-General of UNESCO, Ms Irina Bokova, decided to establish a High Panel of Eminent Personalities, invited to foster reflection on the new dimensions of peace in the contemporary world, in an era of cultural diversity and conditions of globalization and the role dialogue among cultures can play.

The first, inaugural meeting of the High Panel on Peace and Dialogue among Cultures will gather some twenty personalities from different geographical and intellectual spheres - researchers, scientists, representatives of civil society, journalists, writers, artists and creators, entrepreneurs, religious leaders, women and men alike. This first meeting of the High Panel to be held on February 18, 2010 at UNESCO Headquarters, will also mark the official launch of the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures. It is expected that members of the High Panel will meet once or twice a year and participants may vary in accordance with the themes to be taken up.


The principal mission of the High Panel will be to accompany UNESCO’s work in this area and to reflect and to bring to bear different perspectives from the different regions of the world and a range of stakeholders.
