Second meeting - New York - 11 March 2011

To strengthen UNESCO’s activities pertaining to dialogue among cultures, the pursuit of peace, and the promotion of cultural diversity in a globalized world, the Director-General of UNESCO, Ms Irina Bokova, has established a High Panel to foster reflection on the new dimensions of peace in the Twenty-first Century.

Comprising decision-makers, intellectuals and artists from all regions of the world, the High Panel on Peace and Dialogue among Cultures gathers from time to time with the aim of charting new avenues for peace. The principal mission of the High Panel is to accompany UNESCO’s work in this area and to reflect on and to bring to bear a diversity of perspectives from various regions of the world and a wide range of stakeholders. As an open-ended forum, participants may vary according to the thematic focus of the session. A report of the first meeting of the High Panel on 18 February 2010 at UNESCO Headquarters is available: click here to access the report of the meeting

The High Panel will sit for a second time at the United Nations in New York on 11 March 2011 and will address the theme of “Building Peace: Reconciliation through the Power of Education, the Sciences, Culture and Communication”. The private meeting of the High Panel will be followed by a UNESCO Forum, open to an invited public, that will also mark the conclusion of the 2010 International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures and the Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World (2001-2010).
