Culture and Development
Strengthening the contribution of culture to sustainable development is one of UNESCO’s main goals. In 2001 UNESCO Amman supported the Ministry of Culture to embrace the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity (2001) and every year marks the World Cultural Diversity Day with special events.
The linkage between culture and development is manifested through crafts, design, publishing, cinema and music. The Jordanian modern cultural landscape is vibrant and extremely open to the best examples of the development of culture in the world; a number of cultural centers and institutions are daily improving the cultural life in Jordan. UNESCO in Jordan focuses on:
- Consistent promotion of Jordan’s heritage and creativity through exhibitions and activities
- Development of an Award of Excellence for Handicrafts program, in partnership with local NGOs and CBOs
