On the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, UNESCO Beirut in cooperation with Maharat Association is launching the annual report of national observatory for press freedom in Lebanon.
The national observatory for press freedom, which was launched on May 3 2007 by UNESCO Beirut and Maharat, is now publishing its second annual report for 2008. The report describes the situation of press freedom and violations against journalists in Lebanon. In the press conference for launching the report George Awad Porgramme Officer for Communication and Information at UNESCO Beirut spoke about the report.
This year, the report highlights major threats and violations against journalists and the status quo of journalism in Lebanon. The report shows that general situation in Lebanon is a deteriorating one when it comes to press freedom, as still attacks on journalists are taking place, restrictions on covering the news, lack of a professional syndicate for journalists, the lack of job security among other downsides.
