UNESCO Chair on the Sciences of Education - Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia, St.Petersburg, Russian Federation
The UNESCO Chair on the Sciences of Education was founded in December 1993. As an educational body of the UNESCO Chair participates in UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs, the Education for All movement, education for sustainable development and ICT in Education projects, and maintains close contacts with the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO, UNESCO Moscow Office, and UNESCO Headquarters.
The UNESCO Chair aims at using pedagogical tools for promoting the dialogue in the sphere of education, safeguarding and developing educational heritage while integrating it with current public changes, and improving the education system by implementing innovative activities for sustainable development.
Over the last three years, the Herzen University has carried out a range of research, case-studies and analytical reviews for UNESCO in the fields of: “Restructuring of higher educational Institutions in CIS countries”, “Quality of education under the “Education for All” Program: the Russian vision”, ”Specialized training as a factor of ensuring education accessibility”, “Primary education within the UNESCO program “Education for All”; “The adult education in Russia progress and issues”, etc.
The Chair also enhances networking by opening new branches, as in 2006 when UNESCO launched the international pedagogical network “Pedagogical Education: multicultural dialogue” on the base of the Herzen University.

UNESCO Chair “Learning Society and Social Sustainable Development”, Astrakhan State University
UNESCO Chair “Learning Society and Social Sustainable Development” was founded in ASU in December 2004. Within a period of four years’ existence UNESCO Chair of Astrakhan State University has become a regional center, promoting the development of innovative educational programs and projects, aiming at the implementation of UNESCO’s ideas and mission.
The aim of the Chair’s activity is to form the regional system of continuing education, to solve problems related to Bologna process, to create conditions for increasing peoples’ employment and standard of well-being, decreasing social tension, preventing ethnic and confessional conflicts, programming social, economical and cultural development of the region.
The priority of UNESCO Chair’s activities is the development and the implementation of educational programs for different groups of population with the aim to create a learning community in the region on the basis of social partnership. The activities of the Chair are oriented towards new requests from the Caspian region, connected with the construction of knowledge society within the paradigm of life-long learning. This is also closely connected with the need for a pluridisciplinary and all-round education. The expansion of cultural and education activities of the UNESCO Chair contribute to the availability of information resources for all citizens.
