One crucial aspect of sustainable development is the mitigation of the destructive effects of natural disasters on people and societies. Education is an essential element in disaster risk reduction strategies. This requires education of all sectors of society on disaster reduction practices based on the application of scientific and technical advances and integrated in the cultural environment. Education for disaster reduction is a transdisciplinary exercise aimed at developing knowledge, skills and values which will empower people of all ages, at all levels, to assume responsibility for building a safer and sustainable future.
