Samer Al-Samarrai
Senior Policy Analyst
Samer Al-Samarrai, an education economist, joined the GMR team in April 2008. His areas of interest include international education policy, the governance and financing of education systems, educational access and learning outcomes, education-labour market linkages and the relationships between poverty and education. Between 1994 and 2003 he worked at the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex. He then managed a 3-year research project in Bangladesh which explored the financing and governance of education and health services in Bangladesh. More recently he has worked with the Bangladesh poverty assessment exercise and in Kano State, Nigeria, to help develop its 10-year education sector plan. He holds BSc and MSc economics degrees from the London School of Economics and a doctorate from the University of Sussex, where his dissertation examined educational inequality in Tanzania.
