Let’s score goals… for sustainability and peace!
As the 2010 World Cup draws to a close in South Africa, it is time to celebrate the great value of sports to ‘build peace in the human spirit’ and educate towards living together more sustainably.
Across borders, sports are a powerful tool to strengthen social ties and networks, and to promote ideals of peace, fraternity, solidarity, non-violence, tolerance and justice. In an ESD context, the values of sports can be infused and used in various teaching, training, information or awareness-raising media, such as the arts.
The ‘Goals for Peace and Harmony’ initiative, recognized by the International Decade of a Culture of Peace and Non Violence (2001-2010) and the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014), is an art venture. It aims to inform communities of the importance of constructing values of peace and harmony. To do that, goal nets have been installed at different local and global events as symbols of peace where participants are invited to attach peace ribbons symbolizing their desire to achieve these goals and live all together sustainably.
