UNESCO Chair in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in Education for Sustainable Development University of Crete, Greece

The UNESCO Chair ICT in ESD was established in 2008 and aims to promote an integrated system of teaching, learning, curriculum and research in the field of ICT-enabled ESD.

There are five main projects in progress in the theme of ICT-enabled ESD:

  • PYTHEAS: A WikiQuESD Environment Addressing Issues of Learning to Live Sustainably
  • HIPPOCRATES: A PBe-Learning Environment for Teacher Professional Development on Health Education Linked to MDGs
  • PYTHAGORAS: A PBe-Learning Environment for Solving Controversial Issues Linked to ESD
  • ARCHIMEDES: A PBe-Learning Environment for Teacher Capacity Building on Educational Robotics Addressing Issues of ESD
  • THEOFRASTOS: An e-Learning Tool for Measuring School and Home Sustainability Footprint

The Chair has established and coordinates a North-South ICT in ESD Network of 16 university institutions (7 in the EU and 9 in the Arab Region). The members of the network jointly develop projects of mutual interest dealing with issues of ICT-enabled ESD.

The University of Crete, through the initiative of the Chair, has been part of the Mediterranean Universities Network for Sustainable Development led by MIO/ECSDE. The Network prepares the implementation of the Mediterranean Master Course on Education for Sustainable Development.

The Chair takes an active role to reorient teacher education and university study programmes in Greece to address education for sustainability (new ESD courses, infused ESD across the teacher education study programme). More than 50 student-teacher WikiQuESD curriculum projects have been developed.

The Chair also prepares the International Journal of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Education for Sustainable Development (Int. J. of ICT in ESD
