Journalists and media organizations play a key role in reporting on issues and in raising public awareness and understanding of the various dimensions and requirements of sustainable development, and of education for sustainability. Their involvement can reinforce access to information, communication and knowledge.

Recognizing that one major means of raising public awareness and dispelling commonly-held misperceptions is through the print, radio and television media, UNESCO has undertaken activities aimed at enhancing the understanding of media professionals of the facts, issues and challenges surrounding ESD.
