21 February: International Mother Language Day

21-01-2008

The theme of International Mother Language Day in 2007 was the linkages between mother tongue and multilingualism.

Languages play an important role in the integration process in all aspects of public life. However, hundreds of the world's 6,000 languages are absent from the public arena and fifty per cent are in danger of disappearing altogether.

The International Mother Language Day is being observed every 21 february in UNESCO's Member States and at its Headquarters to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingual education.
