The theme of International Mother Language Day in 2007 was the linkages between mother tongue and multilingualism.
The world's nearly 6,000 languages were celebrated on International Mother Language Day, an event aimed at promoting linguistic diversity and multilingual education.
International Mother Language Day 2005 was devoted to Braille and Sign languages. An exhibition was organized jointly by UNESCO, the World Blind Union and the World Federation of the Deaf.
This year, UNESCO Headquarters played host to a unique exhibition of children’s exercise books from around the world illustrating the process by which children learn and master the use of written literacy skills in the classroom.
This year marked the fourth International Mother Language Day which encouraqes all forms of promotion, development and teaching of the mother language.
