Advocacy
Since its creation, UNESCO has played a lead role in promoting literacy and affirming its vital importance as a human right. But the fact that 776 million adults still lack minimum literacy skills gives a striking idea of the global literacy challenge.
United Nations Literacy Decade, with its goal of Literacy for All, offers a new framework for UNESCO to promote the importance of literacy, to raise awareness on its challenges and to encourage partnerships to sustain it. The LIFE initiative gives particular attention to reinforcing the national and international commitment to literacy through advocacy and communication.
UNESCO’s advocacy strategy is based on major initiatives and partnerships with governments, NGOs, international agencies and many other partners.
