"Literacy is the best remedy"
International Literacy Day 2008 placed a special focus on the important relationship between literacy and health. This was the theme for the 2007-2008 biennium of the United Nations Literacy Decade.

International Literacy Day (ILD) 2007 is placing special focus on the vital relationship between literacy and health. This is also the thematic emphasis of the 2007-2008 biennium of the United Nations Literacy Decade 

“Literacy sustains development” was the theme of International Literacy Day in 2006. The message: that literacy is not only a positive outcome of development processes but also a lever of change and an instrument for achieving further social progress.

Nearly 800 million people aged over 15 are illiterate and two-thirds of them are women. International Literacy Day in 2005 examined the links between Literacy and Sustainable Development.

Literacy and Gender was the focus of the 2004 International Literacy Day celebration, in harmony with the theme of the United Nations Literacy Decade.
