For the first time since the International Year of the Ocean in 1998, the UN is dedicating 8 June to the celebration of the seas. Under the new official designation, the UN is embracing this year the World Ocean Day with a focus on raising awareness of the responsibilities we share living with an ocean on our planet. UNESCO appreciates that the UN General Assembly chose to officially recognize this world-wide event.

On this occasion, the Secretariat of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage contributes with a photo exhibition on selected underwater cultural heritage sites. The large format photos (up to 1, 80 m wide) illustrate the beauty of the traces of human existence covered by the waves. Like 'time capsules', the submerged objects reveal fascinating stories about the past. From ancient shipwrecks to underwater caves, the exhibition is an insight to the diversity of the underwater cultural heritage and its astonishing condition of conservation through the centuries of time, or even millennia.

Venue: UNESCO Headquarters, Hall Ségur, 8-10 June 2009, Paris, France
