Competent Authorities

Article 22 of the 2001 Convention stipulates that:

To ensure the proper implementation of the 2001 Convention, States Parties need to establish competent authorities or reinforce the existing ones where appropriate, to provide for

  • the establishment, maintenance and updating of inventories of underwater cultural heritage,
  • the effective protection, conservation, presentation and management of underwater cultural heritage, as well as
  • research and education.

States Parties must communicate to the Director-General of UNESCO the names and addresses of their competent authorities relating to underwater cultural heritage.
