Tangible and intangible cultural heritage, sustainable tourism.

Objectives

The specific objectives of this Chair are to:

  • Protect the heritage of Jordan and promote its cultural tourism so as to ensure its sustainability, taking as references the culture conventions of UNESCO and, in particular, those concerning the protection of the World Cultural Heritage (1972); the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage (2003); and the protection and promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions (2005);
  • Establish active local and global research networks of individuals and institutions specialized in heritage as a tool for sustainable tourism development;Generate development, raise public awareness and contribute to the development and dissemination of best practices in the field of cultural heritage and sustainable development;
  • Provide professional training and consultancy in the fields of cultural heritage, as well as tourism studies;
  • Advance scientific knowledge through basic and applied scholarly research in archaeology, conservation, cultural resources management (both tangible and intangible) and tourism;
  • Participate in the development of relevant national, regional and international research networks in order to permit the exchange and transfer of knowledge in the field of heritage and sustainable development;
  • Promote public awareness about the importance and significance of cultural heritage in the life of people through partnership with the local community and its organizations; and
  • Develop methods and practices on generation –to-generation heritage transmission and inheritance in order to preserve cultural diversity and absorb the negative impact of  globalization.
