Conference communiqué calls for social responsibility to face higher education challenges

29-06-2009

The crucial role of higher education in the welfare of nations and the need to address challenges arising from the economic crisis are highlighted in the First Draft communiqué for the World Conference on Higher Education.

The communiqué calls on member states to prioritise policies and strategies which ensure resources are devoted to higher education and research, scale up teacher education and promote quality and equity.

To achieve these objectives, UNESCO is called upon to help governments and institutions by continuing to implement its standard-setting instruments related to higher education, through capacity-building and furthering collaboration in teacher education and knowledge transfer through TTISSA (Teacher Training in sub-Saharan Africa) and the university network UNITWIN.

The Draft Communiqué will be revised during the Conference based on the outcomes of debates.
