Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (creativity)

Origin: The Convention, adopted by the 33rd General Conference of UNESCO in October 2005, entered into force on 18 March 2007.

Mission: The Convention seeks to strengthen the five inseparable links of the same chain: creation, production, distribution/dissemination, access and enjoyment of cultural expressions, as conveyed by cultural activities, goods and services. In particular, the Convention aims to: reaffirm the sovereign right of States to draw up cultural policies recognize the specific nature of cultural goods and services as vehicles of identity, values and meaning strengthen international cooperation and solidarity so as to favour the cultural expressions of all countries Along with the 1972 Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage and the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, this Convention is one of the three pillars of the preservation and promotion of creative diversity.

Composition: An Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, hereinafter referred to as “the Intergovernmental Committee”, has been established within UNESCO. It is composed of representatives of 24 States Parties to the Convention, elected for a term of four years by the Conference of Parties (Article 23).

Bureau: Bureau was elected by the 12th ordinary session of the Committee. Mandate exprires at the end of the 13th IGC.

Meetings: The Intergovernmental Committee meets in an ordinary session once a year. 7th Conference of Parties was held on 4-7 June 2019. 13th Intergovernmental Committee Session to be held on 11-14 February 2020.
