COMPETITION
FOR 2008-2009
OPEN: MAY 2008
Background
Reform, Change, Improve:
The Challenge for Today’s Higher Education Leaders
Today, many higher education institutions (HEIs) face pressures to
expand opportunities for students, improve the match between societal
demands and what higher education offers, diversify and improve the
quality of their programmes, strengthen research, improve their
institutional governance and management, cope with the diminishing
public funds available, etc. The imperative to adapt or change is felt
by HEIs in nearly every context, and alternative approaches are being
developed and tested everywhere. Opportunities that help
institutions transcend borders and tap into and adapt the wealth of
experience and knowledge of peers from elsewhere can greatly facilitate
the reform process.
LEADHER: A
Collaborative Professional Development Experience
IAU’s Leadership Development for Higher Education Reform Programme
(LEADHER) takes a truly collaborative learning approach to
institutional leadership development for reforms. LEADHER grants are available for partnership projects that will
enable senior higher education administrators from one IAU Member to
undertake or host short professional
development ‘learning visits’ with their peers and colleagues
from another IAU Member. During these short Learning Visits,
senior administrators can observe and analyse measures being
implemented by their peers and share experiences in several areas of
reform.
Areas of reform and change
LEADHER projects can be developed in one or two areas of reform,
including:
- Revenue generation, diversification of funding and
financial accountability
- Application of internal quality assurance measures
- Institutional governance and decision-making
structures
- Research planning, management and dissemination
- Use of ICTs in learning, research and/or management
- Recruitment and professional development of faculty
and staff (HRM policy)
- Student access and equity policies, including actions
to secure success
- Student counseling, guidance and social services
- Outreach, community and extension services
- Incorporating sustainable development into the
curriculum and campus management
- Internationalization strategies, including curricular
reform and cross-border activities
