LEADHER - Overview
|
|
Overview
Within the framework of its mission to strengthen
higher education worldwide by facilitating exchange among its Members,
the International Association of Universities (IAU) is piloting the IAU
Leadership Development for Higher Education Reform (LEADHER)
Programme. By providing future leaders of universities and other
HEIs with the opportunity to participate in collaborative learning
projects, the LEADHER aims at facilitating and speeding up such reform
processes.
The 2007-2008 pilot phase of the programme benefited from the support
of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency
(SAREC/Sida), the King Saud University (Saudi Arabia), and the United
Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The
Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SAREC/Sida) is
supporting the 2008-09 competition as well.
Through the programme, Member institutions from different countries are
able to form collaborative partnerships whose primary purpose is to
exchange first-hand experience and expertise on recent reforms.
LEADHER grants are available to selected partnerships that aim to plan
and carry out an institutional change strategy, building upon and
improving a specific aspect of institutional reform. Grants will
be made available for partnership projects that successfully
demonstrate how collaboration will maximize the potential for success
of the strategy and bring mutual benefits from taking part in the
project and undertaking one or two ‘learning visits’.
Central to the LEADHER programme, these short professional development
visits will involve senior higher education administrators. The
LEADHER Programme emphasizes partnerships which are mutually beneficial
and which involve either South-South partnerships or partnerships in
which at least one HEI is from a developing country.
