Prize in Access
IAU, in partnership with Palgrave Macmillan Ltd, publishers of the IAU
research journal HEP and the Association’s reference guides, invites
scholars and researchers interested in the topic to submit an
analytical essay on the theme: Equitable Access, Success and Quality -
Three Essential Ingredients or Three Mutually Exclusive Concepts for
Higher Education Development?
By linking the 2009 Prize theme to the new IAU policy statement:
Equitable Access, Success and Quality in Higher Education, adopted at
the Association's 13th General Conference at Utrecht University, The
Netherlands, in July 2008, IAU wishes to pursue its involvement and
promote research in this area.

The Joint UNESCO-IAU Research Program in Higher Education (1960)
undertook the first major international study to “identify and
investigate admissions problems” between systems where the structures
and problems varied widely.

Chaired by Dr. Dana Sheikh, the IAU presented a session entitled
“Access, Equity And Success In Higher Education – Prerequisites For
Human Development For Equitable Growth” at the World Bank ABCDE
Conference As the reality in terms of national context, policy and
practice is very diverse, Professor Mohammedbhai, IAU President,
Professor Gomes, the Chair of the Task Force, and Ms. Perpetua Modjadji
presented from an African, a European and an African student
perspective, respectively.

During this OECD Tertiary Education for the Knowledge Society
conference, held in Lisbon,
the Chair of the IAU Access Task Force, Professor Jose Ferreira Gomes,
represented the IAU and one of the Task Force members, Professor Amaral
was an invited expert and chaired a workshop entitled “Funding Tertiary

President, Goolam Mohammadbhai, and the IAU Secretary-General, Eva
Egron-Polak, attended the conference entitled “Pathways Towards a
Shared Future: Changing Roles of Higher Education in a Globalized
World.” Ms. Egron-Polak chaired a workshop on “Access with Success in
Higher Education.” Professor Mohammedbhai presented at this workshop
and Dr. Christina Lloyd., a member of the Access Task Force, was a
Co-ordinator and Rapporteur.

Organized jointly by the Ministry of Higher Education in Malaysia, the
National Higher Education Research Institute (IPPTN) and the IAU, one
of the sub-themes at the conference was Global Mobility, Access and
Equity in Higher Education. A Plenary Session was devoted to Access,
Equity and the Role of ICT and a parallel workshop covered Access,
